The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. Psalm 19:8a, NIV
A while ago, I came across some interesting research results from a study conducted to determine whether reading the Bible daily truly impacts our lives.
The study found that those who read the Bible once a week did not significantly differ from those who never read it. Similarly, those who read the Bible twice a week did not experience a noticeable difference compared to those who did not. Reading three times a week showed a slight difference, but it was still limited. However, the most interesting finding was the significant impact on those who read their Bibles four or more times a week and spent time in God’s presence.
This group of respondents had better emotional and spiritual health. Loneliness decreased by 30%, anger issues by 32%, bitterness in relationships by 40% and the likelihood of an extramarital affair was 68% lower. Additionally, 60% of the respondents indicated that they no longer experienced spiritual stagnation and were 200% more likely to share their faith with others.
Why did the turning point occur on day four? Could it be because these respondents spent more days in the week with God rather than without him?
In Matthew 6:33, we read: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” And in Psalm 19:8, it is written: “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.”
To understand God’s character, we must read his Word. The Bible reveals him as loving, just, merciful and faithful. He desires to lead us daily. The question is whether we allow work, family and even social media to fill our lives or if we intentionally make space for him.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for your Word, which is perfect and gives life. Please help me to prioritise my time to be still with you; speak to me today. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
