What fragrance do you spread? - 25 March 2025

For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:15, NIV
Earlier this year, crowds gathered at the New York Botanical Gardens eager to witness the rare blooming of the Titan Arum. This flower, also known as the “corpse flower”, emits a foul stench similar to rotting meat. Some visitors arrived with masks, while others pinched their noses shut. One woman, who had planned a romantic picnic in the gardens, exclaimed, “This is worse than my husband’s socks after a soccer match!”
Interestingly, the Titan Arum’s awful smell attracts insects needed for pollination. In the same way, we are called to be the pleasing aroma of Christ, drawing those who are broken or far from God closer to him.
In 2 Corinthians 2:15-16, we read: “For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one, we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?”
What kind of fragrance do you spread in your home, workplace or community? Does it resemble the stench of the Titan Arum or does it draw people closer to God? May our lives reflect his love and grace.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for your love and the fragrance of your presence. Help me to reflect your goodness, drawing others closer to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
