Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21, NIV
In Japan, Shitsui Haikoshi became the world’s oldest hairdresser at 108 years old. She began cutting hair at just 14 and still holds her scissors firmly today. Recently, she attended a celebration ceremony alongside her 85-year-old daughter and 81-year-old son.
When asked about the secret to her health and longevity, she shared three valuable lessons: never hold a grudge, never be jealous of others and never argue with people. These were principles she learnt from her mother.
Her words reminded me of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” In Psalm 133:1 we read: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” And in Romans 12:18-19,21, we are encouraged: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath ... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
The enemy often seeks to provoke and tempt us, convincing us that it’s our “right” to be angry when someone wrongs us. Yet, the truth is quite the opposite. We need to release such matters into God’s hands. We must intentionally choose peace – not by avoiding conflict, but by engaging in conversations that protect and nurture peace in our lives. In doing so, God’s blessing will rest upon us.
Prayer: Father God, thank you that I can place my faith and trust in you. Please forgive me for the times I have allowed the enemy to steal my peace. Help me to live in peace with those around me, as far as it depends on me. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
